SPIRIT OF GOD VS. SPIRIT OF CULTURE

Paul in his Letter to the Corinthians
Told them that they had the Spirit of God
Dwelling inside, the Spirit that plumbed the depths
Of God Himself and us, as Christians.
God-lovers sharing the same Holy Spirit
Bringing the depth of God and man together.
The alternative is the Spirit of Culture:
Competition, money, power, fame.
Things that come and go.
Competition becomes impossible as one ages,
Money and fame come and go, fleeting as they are,
Power may be an illusion.
Martin Luther King and Ghandi both agreed
That Love was the most powerful force in the world.
Love as strong, not weak, not yielding and submitting
But creating revolutions of decency and fairness.
Even the British Empire was no match for Ghandi’s non-violence,
Nor the American South with its racism and lynchings any match
For a bus boycott, or the song, We Shall Overcome.
Love forced the hand of John Kennedy who ordered federal troops
To Mississippi.
Still ,we learn that love is silly, goofy, irrational,
As if romantic love comprised the whole of Love,
As if Hollywood or the Wall Street Journal were scriptures
But Love of God is a deeper, stronger cord,
Wrapping together heaven and earth, God and man,
Love deeper than black hole spinning,
Mystery.
