Needless to say, I was not raised with any compassion and have spent most of my life treating myself harshly.

To avoid the harshness of the voice that criticizes the writing, I stop writing.  Writer’s block is easier to take than unleashing a cruel introject when I write.

When reading Kermit Rockefeller’s book, Visualize Confidence, I realized I could have compassionate coaches.  So I chose Mr. Rogers and Ellen Burstyn.  When I am down on myself I imagine a conversation with both of them who usually put things in perspective and I find my mood lightening.

How do you generate self-compassion when you are down on yourself and does this self-rejection interfere with your writing?
