Is materialism the enemy of art, of literature?

From Goswami:

“Materialism that ignored feeling, meaning and intuition… marginalized the arts, humanities, ethics, religion and spirituality– and consciousness itself.  God is declared an illusion along with the other intangible values– love, beauty, goodness, justice and even truth.”

All art is created from feelings, meaning and intuition.  But we are creating in a society that marginalizes the arts– so we are counter-culture, even deviant.  Once the humanities, ethics, religion and spirituality are also cast out of the accepted circle of values, then all poetry is subversive, all literature revolutionary, all art deviant.

We deal in intangible values– we create beauty and truth, love and goodness, justice.  If these are all illusions, then we artists are all mad.

So if you feel alienated, subversive and not-acceptable, it is not your imagination.  That is the society we live in.  The hardest struggle will be to continue to create beauty in a world that doesn’t consider it real.

Goswami makes an interested judgement:  where truth and beauty are considered illusions, literature is impossible.
