Is distraction a gift for writers?

It turns out your inability to focus on one single thing is a mark that you are creative.  Yup, distraction and creativity are linked.

That’s another way to see my ADHD which doctors describe as being “off the chart.”  I take 5 mg of ritalin which is a baby dose, according to my psychiatrist. But I don’t find the distraction difficult which is why I doubted the diagnosis in the first place.

I find I can pull together images, memories, thoughts, reading, ideas of outside like paintings and photographs, ideas from friends and spiritual experiences, church, AA and Al-Anon, prayer….

All of this makes my poetry more interesting and I find writing scenes on the novel also relatively easy.  Move over Chekhov– who was notoriously distractable.

So is you are distractable consider yourself lucky.
