Detaching from the dominant culture

The culture can make it almost impossible to write.  Checking email several times a day, spending hours on the Internet, checking and sending text message, watching television can also cause ADD, too

Spending more than 3 hours on television or the Web makes one more anxious, depression and lonely.  Just what we all need in this uncertain time.

I try to spend less than one hour  a day on the web, check my email twice a day and text twice a day.  I don’t have a TV and I don’t listen to the radio.  I only read the BBC news, otherwise have a news fast.  I check Facebook once a week and I am considering deleting my account altogether.

I pray and meditate in order to stay present and notice the natural beauty around me.

This allows me to think clearly, and to write.  Otherwise I am tossed around like a ping pong ball in the ocean.

The culture is promoting superficiality as a virtue.  Writing requires depth.  So it takes discipline to carve out one’s life from the flotsam of the culture.
