Naturally, to create interest, one’s characters have to have strong feelings at least some of the time. So in the writer’s craft group I am in, I suggested we write a scene where a character expresses strong feelings.
Was I surprised, as was another member of the group, when we found we couldn’t write the scene. I tried– I wrote one about a couple breaking up and a second, about a man finding out his wife is having an affair.
Both were fairly rational– more rational that I’ve been in both situations. But I couldn’t bring the memories up.
I realized that being unable to write strong feelings could either cause a block, or perhaps worse, cause the scene or novel to go flat.
I will work on this because writing strong scenes are vital to writing a successful novel.
